Welcome Ireland from a subway station in Yokohama

Yokohama is the place where Lafcadio Hearn first arrived in Japan and spent until he became an English teacher of Matsue. And it is also the place where hosts four matches of 2002 FIFA World Cup football championship. Team Ireland will have a match against Saudi Arabia on June 11 in Yokohama.

From May to June 2002, Yokohama Municipal Subway makes "Supporting Stations" campaign. Each station displays things related to each entry of the World Cup, like national flag, profile of the country and the football team, and the welcome messages from the children in Yokohama.

Introduction of the campaign:
32 STATIONS OF THE YOKOHAMA MUNICIPAL SUBWAY WELCOME THE 32 ENTRIES OF FIFA WORLD CUP.
TAKASHIMACHÔ STATION SUPPORTS IRELAND.
The national flag of Ireland is put above the sign of the station.
The idea of this campaign appeared because the number of the stations of this subway is 32, and it is just the same as that of the entries of the World Cup.

And Takashima-chô Station (Station #19) became the "Supporting Station" for Ireland. So you can see the messages for Ireland all around the station until June 30, the date of the final match.

And I appreciate to the second officer of the Takashima-chô Station for allowing to put the message from the web author of this site. You can also find the paper mentioned the relation of Lafcadio Hearn and Yokohama. The paper is available here.

Things related to Ireland, national flag, sightseeing informations, profile of the football team, are displayed all around the station.
